Phone Dropped in the Sea? Here's What to Do.
Your phone went into the sea, the pool or a drink. What you do in the first 10 minutes decides whether it can be saved. This guide comes from the cases we see every summer at our repair shop on Atatürk Bulvarı in Didim, a few minutes from Altınkum beach. We speak English.
The first 10 minutes
Order matters. Calmly, in this sequence:
1 · Out of the water, power off
Switch it off immediately. If it won't turn off, lock the screen and leave it alone; don't keep pressing buttons.
2 · Remove case and SIM
Take off the case and pull the SIM tray (and memory card). Water trapped under a case is the sneakiest damage.
3 · Wipe with a dry cloth
Gently dry the outside and the ports with a lint-free cloth. Don't press, don't push water inside.
4 · Ports facing down
Lay it flat with the charging port facing down so gravity drains the water.
5 · Get it to a repair shop the same day
Every hour before the phone is opened and cleaned lets corrosion spread.
6 · Back up if it turns on
If it briefly works, back up photos and contacts, then switch it off again. There is no guarantee it will keep working.

The 5 most common mistakes
All well-intentioned, all make it worse:
Plugging in the charger or a laptop
Powering a wet circuit is the fastest route to a short. Even a day later, if moisture is still inside, the risk is the same.
Putting it in rice
Rice does not draw moisture out; it pushes starch dust into the ports. No scientific basis, only lost time.
Hair dryer or radiator
Hot air drives water deeper into the device and damages adhesives and the battery.
Shaking or blowing into it
Spreads water across boards and connectors. Wipe the outside only.
"It works, so it's fine"
Salt water kills a phone that works on day one within 1–3 weeks: salt crystals keep corroding. Bring it in for cleaning even if it works.
Sea water, pool water, fresh water
Sea water is the worst: salt leaves conductive crystals even after drying and eats copper traces quickly. Most cases we see from Altınkum beach are in this group; same-day treatment is essential.
Pool water contains chlorine and chemicals; slower than sea water, faster than fresh water.
Fresh water (sink, rain, spilled drinks) is the least harmful, but sugary drinks dry into a sticky, conductive residue.
IP67/IP68 ratings are tested on new, undamaged phones in fresh water at limited depth and time. Aged adhesive, a previous screen replacement or pressure under a case can void that protection, and manufacturers do not cover liquid damage under warranty.

The phone is opened, the board and connectors are cleaned with ultrasonic/isopropyl treatment, salt and residue removed.

Frequently asked questions
My phone fell in the sea but still works. Do I need a repair shop?
Yes. Salt water leaves conductive crystals after it dries and corrosion continues for days. A phone that works today can stop charging, get a crackling speaker or fail to boot within 1–3 weeks. Same-day cleaning is the cheapest fix.
Does putting a wet phone in rice work?
No. Rice does not absorb moisture from inside a phone; it pushes starch dust into the ports and delays real treatment. Switch it off, wipe it dry and bring it to a repair shop.
How quickly should a wet phone be repaired?
Ideally the same day, within 24 hours at most. With sea water the window is shorter. Our shop on Atatürk Bulvarı in Didim is open every day, including Sunday.
What are the chances of saving a phone dropped in the sea?
It depends on the liquid (sea, pool, fresh water), how long the phone stayed on and how fast it reaches a technician. Phones switched off quickly and cleaned the same day have a good chance; phones that were charged or left for days have a lower one. We don't quote percentages without seeing the device.
Can data be recovered from a water-damaged phone?
Usually yes: even if the phone doesn't boot, the board can be cleaned and powered briefly to take a backup. We decide on data recovery first, then repair, according to what you want.
Is water damage covered by warranty?
Manufacturer warranties exclude liquid damage (the internal liquid indicator changes colour). At our shop, replaced parts carry a 6-month warranty; the overall function of a liquid-damaged phone depends on its condition, which we discuss openly before any work.
